Space Marine 2 Devs Embrace Modding: Tau, Necrons, and Even a Fishing Mini-Game Incoming!

by Logan May 19,2025

Fans of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 are thrilled as the game's developer, Saber Interactive, has empowered modders by releasing its internal editor, known as the Integration Studio, to the public. This move has sparked optimism that the game could enjoy a prolonged lifespan akin to that of Skyrim, driven by a vibrant community of user-generated content.

In an announcement on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord, game director Dmitry Grigorenko heralded this release as a significant milestone in supporting the modding community. The Integration Studio, previously used internally by developers for all aspects of gameplay development, now allows modders to delve into level scenarios, game modes, AI behavior, abilities, melee combo logic, user interface, HUD elements, and more, simplifying and speeding up the modding process.

Grigorenko emphasized the studio's commitment to the modding scene, expressing excitement and humility at the community's creativity and potential. He playfully shared concept art for a "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, featuring Marneus Calgar, leader of the Ultramarines, as a humorous yet feasible modding project now within reach.

To understand the community's plans, I spoke with Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop, the creator of the acclaimed Astartes Overhaul mod for Space Marine 2. Tom, who recently enabled 12-player co-op, now has access to all scripting tools that govern mission dynamics and game components like weapons and abilities. He envisions possibilities such as a roguelite mode where players start with just a combat knife and face progressively tougher enemies, with chances to gain weapons and health upon defeating foes.

While a new cinematic campaign featuring Chaos is feasible, Tom noted that creating cutscenes remains challenging without access to animation tools. However, he is actively working on introducing new factions like the Tau and Necrons, leveraging available rigs. Meanwhile, the community is enthusiastically pursuing the "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game challenge set by Grigorenko.

The response from Space Marine 2 fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite the game's success and status as one of the best-selling Warhammer video games, its official content is limited to three factions: Space Marines, Chaos, and the Tyrannids. With the modding tools now available, fans can expand the game's universe, fulfilling hopes for additional factions like the Necrons, which were teased in the campaign.

This development is particularly timely given the announcement of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 by Saber and publisher Focus Entertainment. While some fans worry about the impact on potential DLC for Space Marine 2, both companies have reassured that they are not abandoning the game. With modders now equipped with the editor, Space Marine 2 is poised for a vibrant future.
