Capcom Uses AI to Generate Vast Unique In-Game Environments
In the evolving world of video game development, Capcom is making strides by integrating generative AI to enhance creativity and efficiency. Kazuki Abe, a technical director at Capcom with experience on major titles like Monster Hunter: World and Exoprimal, shared insights in an interview with Google Cloud Japan. He highlighted the challenge of generating "hundreds of thousands" of unique ideas for in-game environments, a task that is both time-consuming and labor-intensive.
Abe noted that each game requires thousands to tens of thousands of unique objects, each with its own design, logo, and shape. For instance, designing televisions for games involves creating multiple proposals, complete with illustrations and text, to communicate ideas effectively to art directors and artists. This process, traditionally done manually, can be significantly streamlined with the help of AI.
To address this, Abe developed a system that leverages generative AI to read various game design documents and generate ideas autonomously. By utilizing multiple AI models such as Google Gemini Pro, Gemini Flash, and Imagen, this system not only speeds up the ideation process but also refines its output through self-feedback mechanisms. The prototype has received positive feedback from Capcom's internal development teams, suggesting a potential to "reduce costs significantly" while simultaneously improving the quality of the output.
Currently, Capcom's use of AI is focused on this specific system for idea generation. Other critical aspects of game development, including gameplay, programming, and character design, remain the domain of human creativity and expertise. As the industry continues to grapple with rising development costs, Capcom's approach exemplifies how AI can be a powerful tool in enhancing efficiency without compromising the human touch in game creation.
